StumbleUpon Alerter
Published by Adam Lyttle on March 5, 2008

A few months ago I moved from Digg and focused my energy on StumbleUpon (click here to view my profile). To my surprise the site had a much friendlier community but lacked in some basic functionality.

As someone who actively searches for new content I like to keep track of my discoveries on social networks, something that StumbleUpon is lacking. So I set out to make StumbleUpon Alerter.

Introducing "StumbleUpon Alerter"

The Beta

Get alerted whenever your discovery on StumbleUpon is reviewed or given a thumbs up.

StumbleUpon Alerter is a small tool that sits in the system tray. It keeps an eye on all of your discoveries on StumbleUpon and plays a noise whenever someone reviews or gives your sites a thumbs up. Open the main window to view information about each discovery - including a list of people who have reviewed, thumbed up or thumbed down your sites.
  • Plays a sound whenever a person reviews your discoveries
  • Plays a sound when one of your discoveries is liked
  • Displays a list of your discoveries on StumbleUpon
  • Shows a list of people who have rated your sites
  • Lists all of the reviews for your discoveries
  • Ranks your friends in order of most reviews
  • Made with the same interface as StumbleUpon
Click here to download version 1.2 (1,719kb)

Use the above link to download the latest version of StumbleUpon Alerter. For more details about this version click here.

StumbleUpon Alerter is a free software application designed and developed by Adamant Solutions. Free to download, free from viruses, free from spyware, free from adware and free from anything else malicious.

Tracking your discoveries

A sound is played whenever newly discoveries are reviewed or given a thumbs up / thumbs down. Newly reviewed and thumbed items are highlighted in green and made bold.

For ease of use the number of thumbs up and reviews are displayed to the right hand side of the listing. To view more information simply click on the item listed.

Who likes your discoveries?

(And who doesn't?)

StumbleUpon Alerter makes it easy to watch who likes or dislikes your discoveries. Simply click on the discovery in the main list to view a listing of people who have given your submission a thumbs up or thumbs down.

To the right hand side of their name you can also see, at a glance, how many times the person has liked your other discoveries.

At the bottom of the StumbleUpon window you can view what people are saying about your discoveries. Reviews are displayed in 1 line and show the thumbs up or thumbs down logo.

Analyse your friends

For the first time ever, you can now analyse your friends on StumbleUpon. Within moments you can learn who is reviewing your submissions the most. Clicking on a persons name will display a list of submissions they liked or disliked along with any review they posted.

I envision that this list will get quite large over time. So I have added a "Filter" box at the bottom of the window. Simply type in the first few letters of anyones name to easily find the person you are looking for.

See which domains perform the best

This is a trial feature of StumbleUpon Alerter. It allows you to easily see which domain names are attracting the most attention. This could come in handy for people who want to offer more content to their social network from sources that attract the most attention.

It is worth noting that this product is not endorsed or supported by the founders or developers of StumbleUpon. Adamant Solutions is not associated in any way with the development, design or the running of the StumbleUpon service. If there is any confusion please contact us.

WoW! Great application! Thanks!

Mandi commented on March 6, 2008

This is great, I was using the RSS Feeds for comments on my iGoogle page, but this looks to be so much easier. I can't wait to try it out!

Axir commented on March 6, 2008

It doesn't work for me. It starts but then show no thing.

Thumbs down commented on March 6, 2008

this looks great if you could make it mac compatible :(

eydryan commented on March 6, 2008

it fails in vista too... sais it's mising mscomctl or something...

JC3000 commented on March 6, 2008

Great app! Do you know why it would be showing only two of my discoveries? (See screenshot at tinyurl.com/36hhmm Thanks!

Adam Lyttle commented on March 6, 2008

In answer to your question JC3000 (and something I should have pointed out): Over time it will watch all of your submissions, but in the first instance it will only grab any discoveries on the first page of your profile.

Adam Lyttle commented on March 6, 2008

I have repackaged the setup file to include the missing DLL, thanks for pointing that out eydryan.

SweetSop Design commented on March 6, 2008

This is very very cool. Thanks!

Shana Albert commented on March 6, 2008

Oh Wow!! This application seems amazing!! I just downloaded it and played with it for a bit. It seems wonderful. Thank you so much for putting it together.

SpostareDuro commented on March 6, 2008

Awesome! This is great..I hope it works *-)

Michael Martine, Blog Consultant commented on March 6, 2008

Damn, this is NICE! Thanks so much for making it. If I could make one little suggestion? I'd like to be able to resize the frames. I'm looking forward to analyzing my SU world! :D

SpostareDuro commented on March 6, 2008

Fyi..It works great so far! Thanks again :-)

brian commented on March 6, 2008

Doesn't work for me under XP. It starts, but doesn't show anything.

Summer commented on March 6, 2008

I tried downloading it, got an error about a missing file, and then my laptop crashed.

Summer commented on March 6, 2008

This was the error: Component 'MSWINSCK.OCX or one of its dependencies is not currently registered: a file is missing or invalid

Darth Guru commented on March 6, 2008

Wow man this is awesome. You may have made the only whitehat way to track marketing on stumbleupon. Thank you so much. I will not only be thumbing you but blurbing and blogging about this. AWSOME THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH MAN Peace Darth Guru of Marketer's SOS

Alisha commented on March 6, 2008

I love it Adam !! Great tool ! Thanks !!!!

Kristen commented on March 6, 2008

I got the same notice that summer got. I use Vista so this may be the problem.

Gary R. Hess commented on March 6, 2008

Pretty cool tool. However, doesn't it just show who liked or disliked in the comment section? I suppose that it is still cool to see on your desktop and you get alerted.

Lid commented on March 6, 2008

Brilliant tool! Thank you for making the effort!

SpostareDuro commented on March 6, 2008

You've been blogged! Thanks again Moojj!

Mark Blair commented on March 6, 2008

Pretty slick! This is going to be fun :-) Thanks a lot for the work you've invested in creating this!

JC3000 commented on March 6, 2008

Thanks for the response, Adam!

Liam Delahunty commented on March 6, 2008

To avoid the MSWINSCK.OCX problem in Vista you need to run the installation for StumbleUpon Alerter as administrator. Find where you downloaded the installation file (sualerter_setup.exe) right click it, and "Run as administrator", it'll then install normally. Many thanks for the tool Adam. Liam (liamvictor)

Matt Ridout commented on March 6, 2008

Very good idea, wouldn't be surprised if you got a call or email for SU themselves offering $$$ for this!

Thibaut Barrère commented on March 6, 2008

Very good idea! Thanks for sharing this, I have installed it. Nb: I'm on a mac, using Windows inside Parallels.

Steve Yu commented on March 6, 2008

Quite useful tool. I've downloaded the software. Thanks!

czecho commented on March 7, 2008

Would love to be able to use it but, doesn't work on Vista. Got same message as Summer "component 'mswinsck.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid" Any way to fix this? Thanks...

czecho commented on March 7, 2008

Thanks Liam, just read your comment and your solution worked. :)

Internet Marketing Joy commented on March 7, 2008

Wow! This tool is great! It will really make my Stumbling experience a lot easier and better.

czecho commented on March 7, 2008

Got it to come up but now it doesn't show anything. Running XP. Any ideas?

diVaBa commented on March 7, 2008

Wow this seems very nice. When do you think it will be available on Mac OS.

WTJ commented on March 7, 2008

this software can't install in vista.

Megan commented on March 7, 2008

Now here is a discovery that is going to be extremely useful. No I couldn't use on my vista computer but had no problem on windows xp computer. Thanks for this. Topic worth sharing. Megan Vaillancourt

BG commented on March 7, 2008

Pity there is no linux version

clangnuts commented on March 7, 2008

Great little program. Once the issues with installing it as admin was sorted. Gets a thumbs up from me.

peter commented on March 8, 2008

Hi Adam, thanks for this tool. One thing, does it not count negative thumbs and do you exclude your own votes? IMHO negative votes and your own votes would be well worth happening.

Dancrew32 commented on March 8, 2008

Oh.. you're good.

evil commented on March 9, 2008

It starts, but doesn't show anything. Been a few days and still nothing at all.

Adam Lyttle commented on March 9, 2008

Hi "evil", try downloading the new version (link has been updated). Let me know if that fixes the issue. If not send me a private message on StumbleUpon and I will run through it with you.

George commented on March 10, 2008

First, this is a phenominal piece of software, thank you for sharing it with the community. I've had it running for a couple of days now, but it has now frozen and become unresponsive. I am unable to end the task from XP's Task Manager, and each attempt to do so causes SU Alerter to use more memory (sitting at 115K right now). I'll try and reproduce the issue after a reboot, but if anyone else is having a similar experience I would very much appreciate your input. Thanks again for this tool, I look forward to the 1.0 release.

evil commented on March 10, 2008

Hi Adam thanks for the reply. I tried to message you on SU but it says I don't have permissions to send you a message?

Tim L. Walker commented on March 11, 2008

Nice! Looking forward to giving this a try!!

Ikaro commented on March 11, 2008

Hi Adam, it's a great tool. I downloaded in order to write a review on ikaro.com but it does not work properly for me. It shows URLs but all values (stumbles, reviews) are equal to 0. Any suggestion?

A.R.Mokha commented on March 13, 2008

Wow.. thts grt tool. I'm gonna try this now. Thnx for this tool :)

Nicole Simon commented on March 15, 2008

Adam, maybe you should add a small info below that you need to run it as admin under vista. So far it does not work for me, equaling 0 for every body - perhaps a firewall issue, which port is it using?

EF commented on March 16, 2008

Maybe you could add some instructions on how to set it up.

Matt Ellsworth commented on March 17, 2008

Looks great - I'm going to get started on that right away.

Alfred Saforo commented on March 18, 2008

Help. Does it work in Vista ? After downloading mine it didnt work. Please help .

Nix commented on March 20, 2008

It would be very nice if somebody would like to port that app to Linux... Well done! Wonderful idea!

BlogdesignGuy commented on March 21, 2008

Awesome program, too bad it doesn't run on mac. Another reason to open parallels I suppose.

Tony Lawrence commented on March 26, 2008

What this doesn't give that I would like to have is a list of all my pages that have been stumbled.. I really don't understand why SU itself doesnt have a way to show that - or am I just not seeing it?

Karlana commented on April 13, 2008

You know, this is one awesome script. Thank you so much for taking the time to create it!

Lisa commented on April 15, 2008

Awsome! Thanks for sharing!

Michael Aulia commented on May 9, 2008

Any plan update for this great app?

Renato Rodic commented on May 22, 2008

Another great tool and another THANK YOU Adam... it's so easy to track and add pages...

Sire commented on June 5, 2008

I'm afraid it won't work on my XP. Comes up with 'object variable or with block variable not set'. I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail

Michael Aulia commented on June 24, 2008

Is there any updated version? There are still a few bugs here and there and eager to see new updates/features :)

ACE-KING commented on July 14, 2008

This looks very interesting , if it works. It would be great if stumbleupon would release an API so tools like this could be officially integrated. Anyway thanks , will download it now and try it out !

Diane commented on July 21, 2008

Installed without a problem, did not pull in all my stumbles though (I know I have hundreds LOL!). Wondering if there is a way you can make the app default to Firefox without me having to set my browser default to it? I have to leave my browser default IE :( only because my Outlook mail hates Firefox LOL! Would really love a straight-into-Firefox version!
