Step 1. Remove dead links
The easiest way to make a difference to your PageRank is to do a quick search for dead links your website and subsequently removing or updating them. http://validator.w3.org/checklink is an excellent site to search your website for dead links, although it is rather limited.
Step 2. Make your page titles more descriptive
By making your page titles more descriptive you are increasing your chances of Google finding your content more relevant and, as a result, having people click on your site within the search listings. It is often recommended to include the keywords you are aiming for within the title of each page, although don’t go too overboard with this.
Step 3. Take full advantage of META tags
META tags won’t increase your PageRank substantially, but they will help to classify your site and display it in relevant search results. For information on some of the basic META tags you can use, visit http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2167931. At the very least you should be using the “description” and “keywords” tags.
Step 4. Create a site map
The average user only click on 1 – 3 links when they visit a website - search engines do the same. So it is important to make sure your entire site is accessible within the first 3 links. Content buried deeper within your website may not get the exposure you want. A sitemap can increase the chances of having your entire site listed within the search engine, effectively increasing the relevance of your listing.
Step 5. Add your site to online directories
A link from another website is effectively a “vote” for your website. Ultimately you should aim to get as many votes as possible. This will help to increase your rank on Google and should even push your search engine listing even higher. Start submitting your website to directories such as Yahoo! and dmoz.org.
