This blog is a little over a month old now and it has already started to attract plenty of attention. When growing any blog it is inevitable to have spammers hijack the comments on each post. This is an issue that many of my clients have raised and a problem that doesn't have any easy solution.
Last week we revised the Adamant Solutions comment system. We added a new step to the process which should help to fight off spam comments for the time being. This new step is non-intrusive, you probably won't even notice it.
How do we stop comment spam?
The system now pushes all new comments to our https server (a secure server which is typically used for credit card processing and other high level activities). Although this is isolated from the credit card processing functionality of our website it means people making comments have the same privacy and security as they would when entering their private details for an online purchase.
Most spammers use bots (programs specifically made to search the internet for blogs or comment systems that they can post to). These bots typically use standard http requests to emulate the comment system of a website. The majority of bots wouldn't have the intelligence or know-how to post information to secure portions of website. Thus keeping spammers out of the comment system. For the time being anyway.
The fight against spam is ever growing. Spammers will always find innovative ways around anti-spam systems. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. Unfortunately, advertising this way is relatively cheap (often costing spammers absolutely nothing). The spammer doesn't necessarily want to attract visitors directly from the blog comments. Instead they want to build the perceived popularity of their website. By having a more popular website they are able to have a higher ranking in Google and the other major search engines. These techniques are often frowned upon, so I highly recommend that you don't try this at home.
A Spam Filtering System for the public
Adamant Solutions will be announcing a spam filtering system in the near future. This system will have the capability to be implemented into any blog or online commenting system and will provide secure, 24/7 hour online protection.
