It is important to note that you do not require an iPod (or any other portable media player) to watch or listen to podcasts. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about podcasting – most likely attributed to its iPod like name.
With that said, let me introduce you to Podcasting.
A podcast is a video or audio show that is distributed over the internet at regular intervals. Anyone can freely subscribe to a podcast using a program like iTunes. Shows are automatically downloaded by subscribers once they are produced and released.
Once downloaded the podcast can be viewed or played in most media players - Including: Quicktime, iTunes, Windows Media Player and Winamp. Many people prefer to use iTunes as it makes the entire process of searching, subscribing and downloading podcasts painless.
Most podcasts can be freely copied from one person to another without restriction. This behaviour is often encouraged by producers to increase awareness and subscribers.
Some of my favourite Podcasts come from ABC Radio. They usually record their shows and release it as a podcast within a day or two of broadcasting. To download shows visit the ABC Website.
So now you know what a podcast is. In the future I will explain why your business should have a podcast and I will be looking at successful podcast business models, so stay tuned.
