What is a blog?

The internet was largely one-way when it was first adopted. The publisher of a website would write articles or post new content and the visitors would read it. Fast forward a decade or so later and we have an internet that is very different. These days visitors can read content, comment on articles and even give ratings.

With this progression came a new breed of website called the blog.

Brief history of the blog
Originally a blog was referred to as a Web Log. It was a place where people would write up information about their day, their thoughts and anything else that came to their mind. Not only can the visitors read through the blog, but they can also post responses (known as comments) to the blog entries.

Blogging today
Blogs are used for a range of different reasons these days. From authors who are promoting their books to the dentist who is talking about his/her professional career. The blog has turned into an efficient way to communicate with audiences and organise the content that is published.

The blog has made its way into mainstream media - this is especially true since Rupert Murdoch purchased MySpace (a popular blogging website) for $580 million. It is estimated that a blog is born every half second. Setting up and maintaining a basic blog requires no technical expertise or third-party developers - all that is needed is a web connection.

Corporate blogging and political blogging
Many businesses, corporations and government organisations are now jumping on the blog band-wagon – and by doing so they effectively reach their audience in a much more personal way. The days of impersonal mass produced and force fed advertising has been replaced with a new system that allows corporations, businesses and politicians to interact with the people.

Setting up a free blog
There are many free services available for setting up a free blog. These are great places to configure a personal blog to share with friends and family. Some of the more popular services are: Blogger, Yahoo! 360, MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal and many other clones.

Advanced blogging
Sometimes the free services are a little too restricted. This is especially true for businesses and identities that are trying to live up to their professional appearance. In these cases it is sometimes more important to have a professionally designed blog designed and developed, one that can be tailor made to suit all of the required needs.

Adamant Solutions specialises in the design and development of professional blogs. Instead of having a website like www.blogger.com/yourname you can have www.yourname.com with your very own personal blog.
